Two days ago I asked whether gold’s six-week coil between $4,000 and $4,200 was about to break. It has — and it broke the way the setup was leaning. XAU/USD tagged the $4,300 handle on Thursday before easing back to around $4,278, up close to 6% on the week in a near-vertical run that cleared the top of the range, reclaimed the 200-day, and left the consolidation firmly behind..
What Actually Lit the Fuse
The Strait of Hormuz peace framework is doing the work. Iran and Oman have agreed a shipping corridor through the strait, and crude has bled more than 10% across two sessions, with oil down toward the mid-$70s.
That is the “silver lining” I flagged on Tuesday, now running at full force: cheaper oil resets inflation expectations lower, and the market has repriced the Fed’s path — from roughly two hikes by year-end to about one, with September odds trimmed back toward the high-50s to mid-60s.

Lower implied rates are pure oxygen for a non-yielding asset. This is the peace-trade paradox in full: gold is rallying because the world got calmer — an inversion that only makes sense once you route the move through the rate channel rather than the safe-haven one.
Silver is confirming the leadership, with the gold-silver ratio compressing toward 66.5 from near 69 as silver punched to $62. That is exactly what you want to see when metals are bought for a macro reason, not a fear reason.
The base I described held. The quiet accumulation — asset-manager net length grinding higher, risk reversals favoring calls, central banks still buying — gave the breakout its launchpad.
The coil resolved up because the buyers were already there.
Is There Room to Run?
Structurally, yes. If the disinflation impulse holds and Friday's NFP cooperates, the path clears toward $4,363.72 — the mid-June swing high and the last real barrier before blue sky and above it, the psychological $4,500 level comes into focus.
But I am carrying the same skepticism forward, and the chart earns it. This is a resistance test at $4,300, not a confirmed close above $4,363.
The move is stretched — near-vertical, overbought, and already printing a rejection wick where sellers defended the black line. And the single biggest fuel source is a paradox that can turn on itself: if oil finds a floor because the deal is now fully priced, the disinflation tailwind that drove this move simply stops blowing.

Then comes Friday's U.S. Labor data which could have a massive impact on the direction for Gold prices. Let us take a look at some potential scenarios depending on the data release.

Retail Trader Positioning - Gold (GC)
Looking at retail trader positioning data on the MarketFramework website, Gold is showing Extreme Bearish Divergence.
There are many ways to use sentiment data, one of them being treating positive accounts as "smart money".
Losing retail traders are heavily overcrowded on the buy side while successful traders are actively leaning short, market participants typically use this data as a strong bearish signal—prompting them to look for short entry opportunities, trim existing long exposure, or avoid buying into weak retail sentiment.
The Bottom Line
The coil broke, and it broke up — the question I posed on Tuesday is answered. The new one is durability. Gold has earned the benefit of the doubt while it holds $4,200, but the fuel is borrowed from oil and the verdict still runs through Friday’s data. Room to run, yes — but not a free pass.
